Robert vonKepner is a California artist producing classically inspired work in the style of the Renaissance masters.
What type(s) of art do you practice?
It is called Chiaroscuro, which is the study drawing that was popularized by the renaissance masters. I specifically use a 2b graphite pencil on medium Strathmore paper. These drawings are of the face, hands, and the torso.

Give me highlights about yourself.
I was a classically trained chef as well, and a classically reared individual. I surfed for about 22-23 years, traveling, and was interned in a 5-Diamond, 5-star hotel, as a chef, with world-class art on its walls.
What were your first attempts at being creative?
At about the age of 4-5 years, with my mother teaching me the simple elements of detail (she was an artist of fine landscape painting).

Why do you continue the practice?
To serve my life’s purpose and to be ultimately fulfilled, spiritually, and otherwise.
Do you currently have any pieces featured?
In a cafe with the name of Bello Mundo, located in San Luis Obispo, CA.

I was looking at the pieces scrolling on Grounded Café’s site. Tell me about that series of sketches?
These were for my own sake, and to develop a portfolio, but I now have others. My skills have been enhanced since, and I spend half of the time required to produce a piece.
What has been your most exciting moment as an artist?
To have my work critically critiqued by several curators in some of the best galleries in Los Angeles, and to be in several shows while I was there for a duration of 3-months this summer.

Any parting words?
Even though I am the poorest person I know, (all I can do is) continue upon this road that is leading me in the direction that I am being led on.
